HOLTSVILLE,
N.Y. November 3, 2003 Symbol Technologies,
Inc. (NYSE:SBL), a global leader in real-time enterprise
mobility solutions, and business partner Data ID Systems,
a leader in systems design, announced today that The
Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters office in
California will rely on Symbol Palm-based SPT 1800
handheld computers to manage and track voting systems
deployed at 279 polling locations countywide during the
November 4 elections. Santa Clara County will also leverage the Symbol/Data ID Systems mobile solution to provide machines to roughly 1000 polling sites during the primary election on March 2, 2004. The TigerEYES Fixed Asset Manager© software application developed by Data ID Systems improves data record accuracy, reduces staff time and streamlines verification. Santa Clara County, which moved to electronic touch screen voting systems for the November 2003 election, will now have a complete chain-of-custody record of voting results and equipment from each polling location. Using the Symbol SPT 1800 with trigger handle, election staff and drivers preparing, deploying and retrieving voting supplies and equipment ensure that the right materials are delivered to the right polling location at the right time. By March we will have completely automated the tracking process of polling site infrastructure and will be able to have visibility to equipment including the PC memory cards that contain the actual voting results from each electronic voting machine said Elaine Larson, Assistant Registrar, Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters. The Symbol/Data ID Systems mobile solution eliminates paper-based record-keeping to prevent mistakes and ensure data record integrity. The polling infrastructure for Santa Clara County consists of touch screen voting systems from Sequoia Voting Systems, memory cards, audio equipment, ballot pamphlets and other printed material. The bar coded items are assembled into a complete bar coded voting kit that is then assigned to a particular polling site. Since each polling location receives roughly five tracked voting machine packages that must be received and picked up from each polling location, we need to account for as many as 12,000 items during a primary election, said Steve Skelton, director of Software Development, Data ID Systems. The Symbol Palm-based mobile computer is easy for election staff to use. The device has a long battery life and runs on a proven mobile operating system that can handle our fixed asset tracking application. About Symbol Technologies, Inc.
